I think its more than just a cobalt problem and more of a complete GM problem.Ġ5 Pontiac G6's had the same problem with the electric assist power steering going out. Unfortunately, in all the internet searches, I can't find a consensus on whether fixing this involves an hour under the dash replacing a $30 part or taking it to a mechanic to have him replace the entire $400-$500 steering column.Ĭan anyone tell me exactly what I can do to get this resolved as cheaply as possible? Her car has 75k-odd miles on it and I really don't want to drop $1000 into getting it fixed if I don't have to, but we're really not ready to buy another car yet.

Needless to say, I discovered that these cars have electric power steering assist and that the motors dying is a fairly common occurrence. and I'm sure you can figure out what happened next. went out, bought some power steering fluid. I have a 2005 Cavalier with the 2.2L Ecotec so I figured it was the same configuration. She pulled over, restarted the car and it didn't do it again the rest of the ride. I'm new here on the board - my girlfriend drives a 2006 Cobalt LT and recently she was driving down the road and got a little "ding-ding-ding" sound, "POWER STEERING" came up on the LCD and she lost power steering in the car.
